Dubai — spectacular on first impression and genuinely easy with a young child
The verdict upfront Before we had our daughter, the UAE was a stopover on the way to somewhere else. We had been through on our way to China and the Maldives — a few days to see things, never the destination. Then she arrived, and our first real family trip was to the UAE. Safety, ease, proximity to Europe, reliable weather, and infrastructure that makes traveling with a small child genuinely straightforward. It surprised us.
What works well across both cities
Before getting into the specifics, a few things that apply regardless of which city you base yourself in.
The flights are manageable. Emirates and Etihad are both excellent carriers — we have covered Etihad in our business class review. European carriers also fly direct to both cities. At six to seven hours from most European hubs, it sits in that useful window: long enough to feel like a proper trip, short enough that the jet lag is minimal and your toddler recovers within a day.
The airports are exceptional. Dubai International and Abu Dhabi International are both impeccably run, well-equipped for families, and genuinely easy to navigate with a young child and a stroller.
The hotel market is one of the most competitive in the world. Whatever your price point, your preferred location, or your list of non-negotiables — pool, kids club, beach access, city views — you will find something. The hotels in both cities are modern, well-maintained, and notably welcoming toward families. Children are not an inconvenience here.
Abu Dhabi and Dubai are about an hour apart by car. Driving between the two is straightforward. If you have a week, doing a few days in each is entirely manageable.
The one honest caveat: the UAE is not a destination for people looking for nature, wildlife, or the kind of layered historical atmosphere you find in European cities. Go knowing what it is — a well-organized, modern, family-friendly destination that does ease and convenience extremely well — and you will not be disappointed.
Dubai
Most visitors to the UAE spend all their time in Dubai. We think that is a missed opportunity, but we understand why it happens. Dubai is spectacular on first impression, endlessly entertaining, and extremely easy to navigate as a tourist.
Where to stay with a toddler?
Dubai is a car city. Distances are large and public transport, while improving, is not the way most families get around. Where you base yourself matters more here than in most cities.
We have stayed in several areas across multiple visits. With a young child, we would recommend two:
The Marina gives you the option to walk. The beachfront, restaurants, and general activity of the area mean you are not dependent on a car for every single thing. That independence matters more than it sounds when you are managing a toddler and all the logistics that come with one.
The Palm is the right choice if your plan is to stay put and be on the beach. If you want a resort-style experience where you do not need to go anywhere — pools, beach, restaurants all on site — the Palm delivers that. It is not for exploring. It is for relaxing.
What to do?
We will not attempt a comprehensive list of Dubai attractions — you can find those elsewhere. What we will say is that Dubai has more to keep a toddler busy than almost anywhere we have traveled, and a significant portion of it is indoors, which matters in a climate that can be very warm.
The shopping malls deserve a specific mention because they are not what Europeans picture when they hear “shopping mall.” They are destinations in themselves. Restaurants at a level you would not find in most standalone dining streets, indoor activities, play areas, and everything else — all under one roof. On our last visit we found a play corner (BooBooLand) in Dubai Mall that kept our daughter engaged while we actually managed to look around. That kind of practical win is what makes Dubai work so well with a young child.

The restaurant scene is genuinely extraordinary. Every cuisine, every price point, every international brand you can think of. And the UAE’s general attitude toward children in restaurants is warm and welcoming — high chairs appear without asking, staff engage with toddlers, and nobody makes you feel like you should not have come.
Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi gets fewer visitors than Dubai and deserves more. It feels less performative and, in places, more genuinely interesting.
The Louvre Abu Dhabi
The Louvre Abu Dhabi — architecturally extraordinary and worth the visit on its own terms
Architecturally, it is one of the most beautiful buildings we have visited in the UAE. The building is worth the visit on its own terms. When we went, our daughter was under a year old, but the museum has a dedicated children’s room for older children. For adults, it is a genuinely excellent museum. For families with young children, it is one of those places that rewards even a short visit.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
This is where Abu Dhabi feels different from Dubai. The mosque is one of the most impressive pieces of architecture in the region and the visit feels like encountering something real rather than something built for tourists. It is an experience for the adults, but even children will be impressed by its grandiosity.
The theme parks
Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, and others are all located in Abu Dhabi. They were not our choice on this trip — our daughter was too young and it is not particularly our style — but for families with older children or a specific interest, the concentration of major theme parks in one place is genuinely unusual. Worth knowing about even if it is not the reason you go.
Where we stayed: the Edition Abu Dhabi
The Edition Abu Dhabi — exceptional facilities at a lower price point than comparable Dubai hotels
Not centrally located, but the facilities were exceptional. And at a lower price point than a similar hotel in Dubai. We had a massive, state of the art room, the staff were extremely attentive, the food was great. We had asked for a microwave in our room — not your usual request — and they delivered. Everything impeccable. The Edition is not a beach hotel — for a beach day we used a partner property, which worked well. If beach access is your priority, factor that into your hotel choice. Abu Dhabi’s hotel market is strong enough that you have real options regardless of what you are looking for.
So which one?
Both, if you have the time.
Dubai for the energy, the variety, the ease of being endlessly entertained without effort. Abu Dhabi for the moments that feel more considered — the Louvre, the mosque, a slightly slower pace.
If you only have a week and have to choose: Dubai gives you more to do with a young child. But do not leave the UAE without at least a day in Abu Dhabi. The hour’s drive is worth it.
