The verdict upfront Gold Coast and Brisbane with a toddler is not what most European families expect. The distances on the Gold Coast are enormous, the beaches near Surfers Paradise are not swimmable for young children, and finding quality accommodation takes research. But Brisbane — just an hour away — is a genuinely excellent family city that most Europeans overlook entirely. And if your child loves Bluey, there is exactly one place in the world you need to go. This is the honest guide.
The Gold Coast: managing expectations
The Gold Coast sounds like the obvious Australian beach destination. The reality is more complicated.
The distances are the first shock. Australia operates at a scale that Europeans consistently underestimate. Surfers Paradise, where most visitors base themselves, is a significant drive from the airport and even further from the beaches and activities worth doing. Tallebudgera, the beach we would recommend for families with young children, is almost 45 minutes from Surfers Paradise. Plan accordingly and build driving time into every day.
The beaches near Surfers Paradise are not safe for young children. The waves and currents make them unsuitable for toddlers. If you are traveling with small children, do not assume you can walk from your hotel to a swimmable beach. You cannot.
Tallebudgera Creek Beach is the exception and the recommendation. Calm, shallow water that works perfectly for young children. There is a playground just around the corner. It is worth the drive.
You need a car. The Gold Coast does not work without one. Rent at the airport.
Where to stay: Rhapsody Resort, Surfers Paradise
We stayed at Rhapsody Resort — a self-catering apartment rather than a hotel, which worked well for us with a toddler. Having a kitchen removes the restaurant dependency that makes beach holidays with young children logistically complicated. The resort was fine rather than remarkable. If we went back, we would research alternatives more thoroughly. The Gold Coast accommodation market is patchy — there are good options but finding them takes work.
Our honest recommendation: if you want a genuine beach resort experience in Queensland, consider the Whitsundays or Port Douglas instead. The Gold Coast works as a base for Brisbane day trips and Sea World, but it is not the spectacular beach destination the name implies.
Sea World
Go, but go early and leave when it is time to leave.
Sea World is large, hot, and increasingly crowded as the day progresses. By early afternoon in peak season it is genuinely overwhelming. Arrive when it opens at nine, enjoy the first few hours when it is manageable, and leave by early afternoon before the heat and the crowds peak.
The dolphin and seal shows are highlights. For very young children, the rides and character experiences designed for smaller kids are the main draw — our daughter loved the Paw Patrol show. The food inside is not good. Eat before you arrive or bring your own.
We also managed a ten-minute helicopter ride over the Gold Coast while we were in the area. If the opportunity presents itself, take it — the aerial view of the coastline is spectacular and completely different from anything you see at ground level.
Two rainy days: the honest reality
We had two days of rain in the Gold Coast. There is not much to do. We ended up in a shopping mall. The Gold Coast’s appeal is almost entirely outdoor and weather-dependent. If you get unlucky with rain, you will feel it.
This is not a criticism — it is information. Factor it into your planning, particularly if you are visiting outside the driest months.
Brisbane: the real discovery
Brisbane — one hour from the Gold Coast and worth every minute of the drive
Brisbane is one hour from the Gold Coast and a genuinely excellent family city. We went for one night and wished we had stayed longer.
We stayed at the Treasury Brisbane — a grand, old-school hotel with massive rooms and a location that puts you in the heart of the city. It is the kind of hotel that feels like an occasion rather than a transaction. The room size alone made the trip worthwhile after the apartment in Surfers Paradise.
Brisbane has the urban energy of a proper city without the scale that makes Sydney occasionally exhausting with a toddler. It is manageable, well-organized, and surprisingly rich in family-specific activities.
South Bank is the centrepiece — a parkland along the Brisbane River with the Streets Beach (a free public swimming lagoon in the middle of the city, which is as good as it sounds), excellent restaurants, the Queensland Museum, and the Gallery of Modern Art. We spent a morning here and could easily have stayed all day.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is the best wildlife experience of the entire Australia trip. You get close to kangaroos, feed them, and be close to koalas. The sanctuary is small and intimate — nothing like the vast zoos you find in major cities — which makes it genuinely relaxed rather than a logistical exercise. Our daughter had the best time of the whole trip here. Do not miss it.
Bluey’s World is in Brisbane and worth the trip from the Gold Coast if your child is a Bluey fan. Ours is. We drove the hour specifically for this and it was entirely justified. The experience is well-designed, immersive, and one of those rare children’s attractions that holds attention without becoming overwhelming. Book in advance.
